Performance & Load time. using css media queries only without a mobile first strategy will add a lot of useless page elements (large images will still load) which will take a lot of bandwidth & load times.
Also i am using some sort of php & javascript to test if mobile before loading some of my heavy jquery scripts. This insures the best experience.

One thing I wanted to point out is that the @param: “bogus” shouldn’t be necessary – I’ve always been able to get the same result with just the empty parentheses (or maybe that’s a newer version of LESS than you initially used for this?)
